Platinum Product Junkies Turns 1!!!!

1st_bday_girl

Who would have thought that a year ago that Platinum Product Junkies would be where it is today?  What started off as an off handed comment by a group of naturalistas who are all self described product junkies that “hey we should start a blog” while attending the World Natural Hair show in April of 2012 has lead to this.  Platinum Product Junkies launched Black Friday 2012 (November 23, 2012) and it’s been a world wind since then.  In a year Platinum Product Junkies has published 103 blog posts;  has over 1683 Facebook likes;  6,300 tweets and 1150 twitter followers.  Those numbers are staggering and we owe it all to you, our faithful readers.  You have made this year more than we could have ever expected.

It’s the holiday season which is a time for reflection and as Platinum Product Junkies reflects on the growth and success we have had our first year, we want to thank you all.  For without YOU, none of this would be possible.  You all have supported us in a way that words cannot describe.  We are planning a birthday celebration in January after the holiday season to allow for the majority of our readers to participate in the giveaways and celebration that we are planning.  We would be remiss if we waited until January to acknowledge this achievement and the very people that are responsible for it…YOU.

Thank you from all of the “PJs”….

Alikay Naturals Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo Review

Alikay Naturals Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo

From Alikay Naturals website

Get clean hair Naturally. Made from Raw Black Soap, this shampoo is great at cleaning the hair without stripping it of its natural oils. It leaves your hair moisturized and soft. It is watery form so no thickening agents have been added. Scent is tropical and fruity. Directions: Apply directly to the scalp and massage in to create lather. It is in a watery form so apply in small amounts at a time. It is concentrated, so not much is needed. Even if shampoo doesn’t lather a lot, it still cleans your hair.

FTC Disclosure: The item discussed in this review was provided by Alikay Naturals for consideration. This is not a paid endorsement. All thoughts and ideas expressed are those of the reviewer.

Ingredients: Water, Raw African Black soap, Coconut Oil, Essential Oils, Fragrance, Herbal and Botanical Blend No Petroleum, No  Mineral Oil , No Alcohol, No Paraben, No Sulfate, No Silicones

   Size(s) 8oz , 16oz

   Cost(s) $12, $20

   Samples?  No

Packaging: I received a 16 oz bottle with clear writing and a lovely Caribbean theme label. My label got wet in the shower and the letters  have faded slightly, but they are not smeared and I can still see the writing and read the label

   Scent: an island fruity scent

   Texture: Very liquid like, watery

Lather/Rinsing: You have to be very careful dispensing this out of the bottle during your wash routine. You can easily use more of the  shampoo than needed because its fairly watery in texture. This does not lather, however it cleans the hair and scalp very well without  stripping the hair of its natural oils.

FINAL VERDICT

I love it and that says a lot because I’m not a big shampoo user. I use a lot of clays and cowashes to cleanse my hair but when I need to try a new product and want to clean my hair to start from fresh I like to bust out a shampoo.  This shampoo left my hair pliable and soft.  I actually washed twice because I wasn’t sure if my hair still had oil in it from my prepoo.  For those of you looking for a product that cleanses like a shampoo, but mimics the moisture and softness of a cowash, I highly recommend this product!

Taking the “busy” out of print fashion: A style how to in pictures.

It’s not easy putting the print into fashion because…

There are some women who don’t like “busy” clothes. Busy in this case would mean various prints (i.e: florals, polkadots, stripes). The concern is that these elements can turn a garment from tasteful to tacky in seconds, but it doesn’t have to be that way. One of the best ways to wear prints frankly, is to break it up with a solid color. This color is usually found within the pattern itself (like the peachy pink seen here), or…

You can think out of the box and choose a solid color complimentary to the dominant background color of the printed piece.(the light blue in these pants, for example).

Here are a few more examples of  how one can integrate prints in fashion that I created to help you along using the Polyvore app for iphone. It’s loads of fun!

Price(s): $12.00, $20.00

Consistency: Creamy, slightly thinner than the conditioner

Smell: Very light vanilla cookie

Ease of use:  It was so easy to add to my hair whether my hair was damp or dry. It was also concentrated, so a little went a long way.

Slip:  There was more of a slip on wet hair than on dry hair. I was able to add to my hair and lightly detangle it before adding my styler.

Moisture capacity: I tried this first on my dry hair to re-moisturize and style for the night. The next day my hair was soft, supple and lightweight. When I added it to freshly washed hair, it complimented effect of the conditioner.

Versatility: For those with finer hair textures this also works as a rinse-out. I liked it as a leave-in conditioner or a light styler as long as it was followed with a sealer.

Final Verdict: Hands downs or I should say Curlies UP, NICE! I liked how this played with my dry hair. I like to dry style during the winter more so than in the spring or summer. I added this to my dry hair and twisted it for the night. When I woke up, my hair had a subtle sheen and was pliable and soft to the touch.

Product Review: Dezign Ayuan Naturals “Define Curly Pudding”

Main Picture

Product: Define Curly Pudding

The premise and claims (from Dezign Ayuan Naturals):

“A Curly Girl Best Friend

Known as the “Curly Girl’s Best Friend”, this product will help you control those unruly curls and magically transform them into romantic bouncy curls that will get you noticed. Just a little bit goes a long way in restoring your dry tresses.  Defined curls and twists everyone will notice. You will experience Frizz Free.  Moisturized Defined Curls or Waves. Product will not flake or cause dryness.

Provides light to medium hold.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit ,Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice(Aloe Vera Gel), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Botanical Oil Blend, Glycerin, Vegetable Wax,Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Tocopherol(Vitamin E), Citric Acid,Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (and) Sorbic Acid, Fragrance

Size(s): 2 oz, 8 oz

Price(s): $6.00, $16.00

Consistency: Thick, like butter cream frosting

Picture to show product consistency

Smell: Vanilla

Ease of use:  This cream had a thick consistency, spread easily, sank into the hair and left my dry hair, soft.  I placed an inch of product on my finger and used that amount per braid. I was heavy handed on a few braids; it just coated more, but not too much.

Slip:  This really didn’t have slip consistency, but it did glide down the hair and coated each strand.

Moisture capacity: The Curly Pudding was great for keeping the moisture in as a part of well-balanced hair maintenance routine. A leave-in conditioner underneath the Curly Pudding really punched it up.

Versatility:  I can’t see myself using this for a wash-and-go style in the warmer months because it was too thick for my taste.   For those with finer hair textures or looser curl patterns, you need a minimal amount to get the maximum effect. I prefer thinner creams for wash-and-go styles and thicker creams for twists/braids.

Final Verdict:  I have to say, I was impressed because I can never get a braid-out to look right. With Define Curly Pudding I just have to tweak where I place my braids in order for my hair to lay right when I take the braids down.  My hair was defined, lightweight and moved when I turned my head. For my hair, that was a big deal! It does not grow down, but up.
