Hands & Nails

June favorites

It’s time again for the monthly favs for June!! I can’t believe it’s July already, so sorry about the delay.

We’re going head to toe this go round, so let’s get into it!

Hair: Hairveda Red Tea Strong Holding Gel: Talk about frizz control?! This gel, loaded with fab ingredients like aloe vera, argan oil, and Rooibos tea extract tamed my curls and left them shiny and frizz free for 3-4 days. Other nourishing oils in the product helped me maintain moisture in my curls throughout the week so I didn’t have to really refresh much. Here’s a pic of my hair using it:

Despite the “Strong Hold” in the name , it’s really a flexible hold that keeps frizz at bay and allows your curls to remain soft and bouncy.

Face: Rite Aid Renewal Duo Fiber blending brush (synthetic): I actually bought this brush for my mom not realizing she had a brush like this already and I’m so GLAD I did not return it. This is the softest brush I’ve ever felt from a drugstore brand. It blends all my liquid foundations so effortlessly that it’s a brush that been washed so many times this month because I refuse to rotate to another. Because the brush head is on the smaller side, I’ve also used it to apply blush and setting powders with no issues.

Body: TWO items I’ve been hooked on because of the smell that are also uber moisturizing:

Citrus smells always get me hook, line and sinker! Both of these are loaded with oils and butters that left my skin feeling soft, hydrated and supple without the greasy feel. For ladies on the go, the Pacifica butter comes in packaging that’s perfect for having in your purse to attack those stubborn areas, or simply to replenish moisture after handwashing. I definitely will be repurchasing these!

Nails: Tips and Toes edition!

  • Surreal Appeal by China Glaze
  • Amanda, by Zoya Nail Polish

I have been married to these two for my tips and toes, because while I love to sport super colorful shades for the summer, my work environment limits how “expressive” my nails can be.  Needless to say, I thought my toes would be having all the fun with the splashy coral of Surreal Appeal, but Amanda made a believer out of me as a person who typically doesn’t gravitate towards nude shades. Amanda is the updated version with a peachy edge. Against my skin it’s absolutely lovely and coordinated well fashion-wise (where I would usually have to change my polish). Since my recent move to LA, I have been going to a ton of different events and haven’t had to worry about my manicure one bit. Zoya’s formula is superb. I never chip with it and it lasts a week or more.

So, what are your favs for June? Tell us! We wanna know (so we can go buy it already)!

May favorites

  • Juice Beauty Reflecting lipgloss in Pink- I received this in one of my beauty bags this month and it’s been glued to my side ever since. The moisture and shine from this gloss made it a pleasure to wear. I was also thankful that it didnt leave a residue as some lip products do after being on for a while.  The citrus scent was also a plus.
  • TheBalm Instain Blush in Toile – This gives a nice flush to my cheeks for my “no makeup, makeup” looks. I’m working on a review right now, so I won’t completely give it away–but longwearing MEANS  LONGwearing!! (Nuff said).
  • Jesse’s Girl Cosmetics /Julie G Gumdrop nail polish in Crushed Candy-If I could eat my fingers I would because they look like candy! This polish is super cute, super pink and I was loathe to remove it! It’s one that I kept reaching for time and time again.
  • Sake fragrance mist, by Fresh- This light, clean and crisp scent garnered tons of compliments! There’s not much else to say about this one other than you need to check it out at Sephora and take a whiff. It’s a keeper!
  • Dior Diorshow New Look mascara- We joke at PlatinumPJ about having anemic lashes, and I think mine may be the worst of them all, but this mascara came to my rescue! It plumped, defined and lengthened my lashes. I really like the brush it comes with that makes it easier to get the lashes in my inner corner.
  • CoverFX cream foundation in N110 as a concealer : This stuff has stolen my heart!! It’s super creamy, blendable and doesn’t settle into lines or cake. It works with all of my setting powders which is a plus because not all makeup works well together. The coverage of course, is excellent and so close to my skin that even I’m fooled and forget I have it on.
  • Herbal Essences Conditioner in Unbreakable Seduction: This is a trusty rinseout and detangling conditioner. It has just enough moisture and protein in it to keep my hair well balanced, and tons of slip to make detangling a breeze

Essie’s First Timer Nail Polish: Review, photos, swatches

Essie says play innocent and coy, like it’s the very first time…

One of the colors from Essie’s 2013 resort collection, “First Timer” is described as a “adorable newbie green” and that’s pretty accurate because it’s not an “in your face” green, but a green suitable for someone not willing to go all the way with a bolder color. The PolishAholic shows exactly what I mean with comparison swatches vs. last years Mojito Madness which is a true lime green. First timer is a pastel version of spring green. This is the way it looks in the bottle, but on my nail  it’s a tad greener. Otherwise, it’s pretty true to color.  The polish was super easy to apply and with two coats my nails were completely even and opaque. There was no streaking or pooling. As with all of my polishes, with my trusty Revlon top coat I was able to get 7 days with just a smidge of edge wear.

Final impression

This is a very pretty, wearable color for everyone, but for darker complexions looking for a truer pastel this might not be for you. Those that are fans of green polish should definitely add this to your collection because it’s not easy to find a green creme shade like this that applies so seamlessly.

Essie’s In the Cabana Nail Polish: Review, photos, swatches

Get ready for summer– Cabana Boy’s beware!

One of the colors from Essie’s 2013 resort collection, “In the Cabana” is described as a “self assured, aqua azure” and it certainly is. It reminds me of the clear blue waters of Curacao or some other tropical destination with a slight pastel edge. It’s true to color when applied on the nail. Within two coats my nails were completely opaque, but this formula has a consistency that can get a little thick along the edges when applying it so watch out. Otherwise, there was minimal streaking and for the most part it applied evenly. As with all of my polishes, with my trusty Revlon top coat I was able to get 7 days with just a smidge of edge wear.

Final impression

If you’re a fan of blue– you will LOVE this color and embrace it like a newborn babe. It’s bold, daring, and translates well particularly on medium to dark skin tones. I think you’ll agree, it’s one to keep.

Chrome French Manicure

Creative  Nail Design (CND) Shellac

I made two very important decisions today: I decided to try Shellac polish (chrome French manicure) and to get my nails done regularly. I LOVE nail polish, but I don’t always love polishing my nails. I’m not as neat and meticulous as I would like to be, and I think I need to start treating myself to some “mini luxuries”.  A manicure can take the edge off life.  It can make life’s little irritations less irritating. I was a bit concerned about Shellac damaging my nails (thinning my nail beds) but Tori, my manicurist, assured me I wouldn’t have that problem. She recommends Shellac for “when it matters most”, and to switch it up with standard polish. I’m a neutral polish girl, but I definitely plan to experiment with bold color and nail art, now that somebody else gets to worry about smudges, polish mishaps,  etc.  All I have to do is show the neat, finished, perfect results. I’m good with that. I’m totally looking forward to 14 days of worry-free, chip-free nails.

I’m wearing a Chrome French Manicure, with CND Cityscape and Silver Chrome on the tips.  Do you wear Shellac? Do you like it? Did you experience any damage to your natural nails? Talk to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Oh, and if you’re in the Metro Detroit area, and you want an awesome manicure, make an appointment with Tori at the Premier Salon at Macy’s in the The Somerset Collection, in Troy, MI

Life’s A Beach: NCLA’s Spring ’13 Nail Lacquer Collection Review, Photos, Swatches

NCLA Life's a Beach Collection

NCLA has been on the block for a while, but is fast becoming a brand known for fun and flair– Cali style. Their slogan even encourages us to live vicariously in their world and “Enjoy a little California on your fingertips.”

Well, as I’m relocating to California in a few months, I figured an early start wouldn’t hurt. I did a nail haul over the black friday holiday and fell in love instantly! So, when their Spring collection was released I did not hesitate to let my mouse clicks do the talking. Thanks to a discount via Lucky breaks (Love ya too LuckyMag!), I’m able to present this collection of four lovely pastels that play upon the bright, fun, yet laid back personality of California.

My favorite color is green, so I was hyped to see that this color was included in the collection. It’s not just any ‘ole green through. This one is special. AM:Beauty Sleep PM: Shopping Spree is like a chameleon. In the bottle, it looks like your basic mint green, but on the nail it does a bait and switch! It’s actually a pale green with a tinge of yellow (and I mean a tinge).  This tinge (at times, and depending on the light) would make the polish appear almost neutral. It may sound a bit wild, but after wearing it for a few days, I totally got how the polish got it’s name. In the daylight (AM), it looks neutral (classic, clean and serene), but let the lights go down (PM)– you get the swash of color back and you’re ready to roll out on that spree!

Well, perhaps it’s my imagination, but you be the judge.

For me, yellow is a tough color to pull off because of my skin tone. It either looks like I have a banana plastered to my nails OR used school bus paint. Fortunately, Tennis Anyone was none of the above. It’s a whisper of yellow with maybe a green undertone because it looks like a pastel version of the Penn tennis ball. Despite my prior comments about yellow, I probably had the most fun putting this one on. :)

The next color commands you not to call it peachy, but I felt like Don’t Call Me Peachy was just that–peachy. It was a pretty color, but I’ve seen it before. If you’re a person that doesn’t want to commit fully to pink nor orange polish this season it will be a wonderful medium for you as it’s on the softer side. This color is also perfect for tan, olive, and medium to dark skin tones.

Last, but not least, As If  is certainly a color you’ve seen before, but you can’t do Spring without it. I would describe it as a pastel lilac and it did not disappoint. I received the most compliments wearing this gem. For purple lovers who’d like to lighten up a bit this season, this is the way to do it.

Slide4LilacallnailsLilac close

Each polish had the same thin consistency typical of pastels. Application of the polish wasn’t difficult, but lengthy because of the streaky, uneven appearance I got with the first 2 coats. By the third coat my nail was fully opaque and by coat number four it appeared smooth.  All of these polishes have a creme finish with a natural shine. The pics here are without any top coat for your consideration. You could do with or without it depending on your preference. I’m a major chipper, so I applied NCLA’s gloss it over top. The polish wore well after a week with only minor edge wear. I reapply top coat every 2 days to prolong the life of my polish.

Final Impressions:

NCLA did a great job putting together a line with a even mix of unique and fresh combined with clean and classic colors for Spring. AM:Beauty Sleep PM: Shopping Spree was the standout for me and my favorite of the collection. Despite the application process, I felt the polishes delivered with good durability and a beautiful finish. I don’t mind applying 3-4 coats of polish, but for the average on-the-go woman going DIY, it may be a hardship. If you’re short on patience, simply take it to your friendly local nail salon, or have a mani party because really: you don’t want to miss a taste of life on the beach. It looks great.
