The Lipstick Chronicles

lipstick chronicles

I admit it….I’m a lipstick lover.  With a collection of over 100 different lip products and still counting, you could say I’m sort of obsessed with this one beauty product.  I didn’t always think that I could, or even SHOULD wear lipstick.   I mean I’ve got big lips.  My cousins called them “soup coolers” when we were kids.  They are full, thick, and pigmented; most people with lips the size of mine or larger tend to shy away from lipstick.

So how did I become the girl with the juicy lips who loves to rock lipstick?  It was a process of sorts.  You see, I’ve always loved makeup but it took me a while to develop my own style and learn technique. Actually, foundation and mascara were fairly easy to master, but let’s face it, they’re not that exciting.  I just recently became brave enough to add blush to my routine, and love it. I’ll be honest; I still struggle with applying eye shadow.  If it’s more than two colors, I’m cashing out.  So my makeup option of choice became lipstick.  It’s easy to apply, and I realized long ago that I looked GOOD in it!  You’ll  pry my lipstick from my dead cold hands!

I love lipstick because it has the ability to transform any look. Whether you are wearing makeup or not, with one quick 30-second swipe  you instantly look a bit more “together.”  It brightens your face and whitens your teeth—the right shade, of course. When I’m not particularly in a good mood a swipe of lipstick makes me feel so much better!

I hope that you all enjoy The Lipstick Chronicles, a glimpse into the world of a lipstick lover!   In this feature you’ll find swatches, application techniques, dupes, and lip-care guidance. What you won’t find here are any rules—because there are none!  There are no off-limit shades; we can all pull off just about any color, and The Lipstick Chronicles is here to show you how.

So, gather around my fellow PJs, I’ve got much to show you!

Review: Brown Butter Beauty Babassu Butter Love Deep Conditioner

Brown Butter Beauty Babassu Butter Love Deep Conditioner

The premise and claims (from BrownButterBeauty.com):

“This creamy rich deep conditioner drenches the hair with moisture and nutrients. It contains Organic Babassu Oil from Brazil which penetrates the hair to restore dry and damaged hair. It helps to define curls, softens and detangles hair.

This conditioner is excellent for thick, coarse, dry, curly, tangled hair. Your beautiful curls will remain moist and shiny.”

Ingredients: Water, behentrimonium methosulfate (BTMS), cetearyl alcohol, cetyl babassuate, babassu oil, wheat amino acids, soy amino acids, arginine, serine, threonine, acetamide MEA, hydrolyzed hair keratin, panthenol, sodium cocoylcollagen amino acid cocoyl sarcosine, wheat germ acid, wheat germ oil, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, sulfur, polysorbate 80, oleth-10, jojoba oil, yarrow extract, nettle extract, sage extract, lavender extract, vitamin E, hydrolyzed glcosaminoglycans, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol, natural color, fragrance

Size(s): 8 oz, 16 oz

Price(s): $15, $25

Location(s): Brown Butter Beauty Main Site, Etsy

Color/Consistency: Creamy, medium to thick density. It’s naturally light yellow in color

Smell: Hard to describe, but if I had to I would say it’s a light lanolin type scent. Not strong at all.

Ease of use: Easily spreads and distributes along my strands. Due to the density, it really coats the hair and you get the sense that your hair is soaking the product in. That being said, I did not require much per section. A 16oz jar will last me about 6-8 uses. My hair properties are here.

Slip: BTMS is the second ingredient in this conditioner so the slip is AHHMAZING!! It can (on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the hardest) tackle a stage 10 tangle no problem. I’ve used it when I’ve gone up to three weeks of not detangling my hair and had no issues getting tangle free. No single strand knot issues either.

Strengthening: The formulation has a decent amount of proteins ranging from basic amino acids to hydrolyzed proteins, but not so much that it makes your hair dry and brittle. In fact, I’m more on the protein sensitive side and I’m able to use this conditioner without any issues—probably because the predominant ingredients are geared towards hydration. My hair feels as strong as it usually feels. My amount of shed hair with each detangling session remains the same.

Moisture capacity: My hair retained moisture and felt soft using this as a rinse out conditioner as well as a deep conditioner, but in my opinion it’s a sin to rinse this baby out, particularly in the winter. It is SUPERB as a leave-in (LI) conditioner! For those who love to style using the tightly curly method or using the conditioner + oil method, this is the TOPS ! It defrizzes, softens and defines when used in these settings providing a solid moisture base for 4+ day hair before needing any moisturizer to refresh my curls. This conditioner’s formulation more than lives up to my expectations and provides ample hydration for curls.

Versatility: This conditioner can function in multiple ways from rinse out to LI to deep conditioner. It performs well with or without the use of heat or steam. I have been repurchasing this product for 2 years now. This is a testament to its consistency and performance in my hair.

Final exam:  This is one of my top 5 best conditioners for a reason—fabulous formulation and consistent results. I consider it a predominantly hydrating conditioner, but it has a good amount of protein which in synergy lends strength, definition, softness, and manageability to the hair. It’s a great multipurpose conditioner with awesome detangling ability to melt stage 10 tangles, and I think that even though it’s touted as a deep conditioner, the bang out of the buck is to consider using it as a LI conditioner under oil or a styler of your choice. Whatever you choose, know that you’ll be getting the best of both worlds. It’s worth every penny!

Ankh Holistic Healers: The Unboxing

AnkhHolistic

The Ritual and Natural Hair Pudding

FTC Disclosure: These products were provided by Ankh Holistic Healers. This is not a paid endorsement. The views expressed are my own.

I’m always on the  lookout for new, exciting hair products.  During one of  my recent online Etsy searches, I stumbled upon Ankh Holistic Healers and decided to convo the  owner, Adachi, about purchasing an 8oz jar of her hair pudding.  I also wanted to find out if she was planning to attend the World Natural Hair Show.  Well, out of the goodness of her heart, she offered to send me some products to try – free of charge. Of course I accepted, and I’ve already received my goodies and I’ve had a chance to try them out.  I’m very pleased, and I’m looking forward to a full review after I’ve used the products a few times. What did Adachi send? I received The Ritual set, along with a 4oz jar of the Garden of TeHuti Scribe Natural Hair Pudding. My package arrived quickly and securely. Everything smells wonderful, but the “Fantasy” MA’AT Floherbal Infused Shampoo   and  “Sweet Wings” Leave-In Conditioning Mist scents are my favorites.  Check out the forum in the next week or so, for a full review

Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va Vivid Powered Contour Cleansing System: The Unboxing

Happy New Year PJ’s!!! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.

Along those lines, I’ve really been thinking about what my New Year’s resolution should be. Among all of the things I want to do this year, what did I feel I needed to commit myself to the most?

Can you guess?

Well,  I’ve committed myself to developing a better skin regimen, because something’s gotta give. At age thirty-something, struggling with acne is a chore. Don’t even get me started on the hyperpigmentation and scarring that results from all these blemishes I’ve had over the years! OY! Anyway, it’s past time to get this acne under control, and get clear!

So. when Olay introduced their fresh effects line complete with a nifty cleansing device promising 400% better clean vs. basic cleansing, my wallet did the talking.

What’s in the box:  Shine shine go away! Cleanser & Va-Va Vivid Power Brush (AAA batteries not included)

First Impressions: This brush is super tiny compared to all the power brushes on the market right now, but based on its size it seems like it may have the advantage of getting into those nooks and crannies neglected by most brushes. The bristles are flexible & rubbery, but a quick run of these against my face didn’t feel bad at all. The cleanser (peeking at the ingredients) has kaolin, iron oxides, and witch hazel (the shine fighting ingredients), but they’re way towards the bottom of the list, so I’m unsure how well this cleanser will combat oil. If you have a sensitivity to smells or dislike sweet floral perfumes then this is definitely something you should avoid. It’s strongly scented with perfume. I’m not a fan of floral scents in general, but in small quantities it’s okay.

It will be interesting to see how this all works out. Stay tuned! Detailed pics below!
